Despite the app controlling much of the game, there was enough to do in person to that it didn't feel like we were just watching one person play a video game. The story/lore is pretty cool and the various decisions you get to make are pretty cool. The missions are well built and none of them ever really felt like filler or dragged on. Each card has different actions on either side allowing you to adjust as you crawl through dungeons. Roll your dice then depending on what symbols you rolled, you can pick different attacks or abilities based on the cards you've unlocked for your character. Combat is fun with enough variety and strategy to keep things interesting from beginning to end. With the Descent companion app, everything is a mystery for everyone and you all get to play on the same team. Or it's like Gloomhaven where whoever has to set up the map knows where everything is and it plays more like a puzzle than an adventure.
DM setup where it's one persons job to play as an evil accountant and lose the game so the others can have fun. If you're familiar with other augmented RPG games, usually it's a party vs. Gives it a great sense of immersion that we really enjoyed. It feels like playing DnD at times without all the having to keep track of all your stats and figure out if you have line of sight and whatnot. The set pieces allow you to build up and down giving you a much greater sense of the game space. One of the really neat aspects of the game is it's a a board game in three dimensions. The app will track what terrain pieces to put into play, combat, our progress as we level up and acquire new gear and so on. However, the companion app is required to play it and hilariously enough more required than the board game element itself.
